Pakistan cricket fans have a lot to look forward to this month. The Pakistan Cricket Board has officially confirmed the schedule for a three-match One Day International series against Australia, set to take place across two of the country’s most celebrated venues. The series represents a significant moment for Pakistan cricket, offering the home side a chance to build momentum in the 50-over format ahead of a busy international calendar.
Where and When Will the Matches Be Played?
Australia will touch down in Islamabad on 23 May, giving the touring party a week to settle and prepare before competitive action begins. The opening match of the series will be held at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on 30 May, a ground that has earned a strong reputation for producing competitive cricket in recent years.
The series then shifts to Lahore, where the remaining two matches will be hosted at the legendary Gaddafi Stadium on 2 and 4 June respectively. All three matches are scheduled to begin at 4:30pm local time, with the toss taking place at 4:00pm.
| Match | Date | Venue |
| 1st ODI | 30 May 2026 | Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium |
| 2nd ODI | 2 June 2026 | Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore |
| 3rd ODI | 4 June 2026 | Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore |
The IPL Shadow Hanging Over Australia’s Squad
One of the most talked-about storylines surrounding this series is the unavailability of several frontline Australian white-ball players due to their Indian Premier League commitments. The IPL regular season wraps up on 24 May, with the final scheduled for 31 May in Ahmedabad just one day after the first ODI in Rawalpindi.
This creates a complicated availability picture for Cricket Australia’s selectors. Players whose franchises exit the tournament before the playoffs will have a realistic window to join the Pakistan tour. Among those expected to be available relatively early are all-rounder Mitch Marsh and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis, both representing Lucknow Super Giants, along with Cameron Green of Kolkata Knight Riders.
On the other hand, Cooper Connolly, Xavier Bartlett, and Ben Dwarshuis of Punjab Kings, as well as Matthew Short of Chennai Super Kings, may bypass the Pakistan leg entirely and link up with the Australian squad ahead of the Bangladesh tour if their franchises advance deeper into the playoffs.
Pakistan’s Biggest Advantage — No Cummins, Hazlewood or Starc
Perhaps the most significant development for Pakistan’s batting lineup is the confirmed absence of three of Australia’s most dangerous pace bowlers. ODI captain Pat Cummins, along with Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, will not feature in either the Pakistan or Bangladesh series.
This opens the door for Pakistan’s top-order batters to face a comparatively less experienced Australian pace attack. While depth and talent still exist in Australia’s bowling ranks, the absence of these three world-class performers undeniably shifts the balance in Pakistan’s favor on home pitches.
Star batter Travis Head is also reportedly set to skip both tours, choosing instead to prioritize preparation for Australia’s upcoming Test series against Bangladesh scheduled later in the year.
Will Mitch Marsh Lead Australia?
With Pat Cummins stepping away from white-ball duties, the question of captaincy becomes an interesting one. Lucknow Super Giants have suffered six consecutive defeats in IPL 2026, which means Mitch Marsh could become available well before the series opener. If that happens, Marsh is considered the frontrunner to take on ODI captaincy responsibilities in Pakistan.
Josh Inglis is also being considered as a potential stand-in leader, adding another layer of intrigue to Australia’s squad dynamics heading into this tour.
A Look Back at Recent Pakistan vs Australia History
This series will be Australia’s first ODI tour of Pakistan since March and April 2022, when the hosts claimed a hard-fought 2-1 series victory. The two sides have met on Pakistani soil more recently in other formats Australia toured for a three-match T20I series in January and February of this year, where Pakistan dominated comprehensively to complete a 3-0 whitewash at Gaddafi Stadium.
Australia also visited Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where they registered a five-wicket victory over England at the same Lahore venue in February.
Why This Series Matters for Pakistan
Beyond the result itself, this series carries considerable strategic importance for Pakistan cricket. Performing well in ODIs at home strengthens the team’s ICC ODI rankings and builds confidence within a squad that has been rebuilding its white-ball identity over the past two years.
Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore has proven to be a fortress for Pakistan in recent times, and the familiar conditions at Rawalpindi give the home side an added edge. With Australia arriving without several of their biggest names, Pakistan will be expected to dominate but the Men in Green will be fully aware that an understrength Australian side can still be dangerous on any given day.
